Crew Member

Classification – Non-exempt (hourly)

Salary Range - $8.50 - $10

Reports to – Farm Manager

Summary / Objective 

The Crew Member will assist farmworkers (“Growers”) with intellectual and developmental (ID/DD) disabilities and volunteers in everyday farm tasks, including planting, harvesting, weeding, animal maintenance, CSA box preparation, and Farmer’s Market staffing, while keeping a positive attitude and maintaining a healthy and inclusive work environment. As a Crew Member working among adults with ID/DD, this person may be asked to lead some tasks, making sure that their team finishes each job accurately, efficiently, and inclusively according to each person’s abilities. The Crew Member will also work independently on farm tasks when needed. No prior farm experience or knowledge is necessary, only a desire to learn, a proactive attitude, and a willingness to work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Essential Functions


Occasional Responsibilities

  • Work under Farm Manager to develop plan of action for each day

  • Works with Growers in field, using a variety of methods to ensure that Growers understand how to complete the task

  • Tasks may include:

    • Weeding/Landscaping

    • Harvesting vegetables in varying weather conditions

    • Making value-added products (e.g., pickles, pesto, jam) on the farm or in a commercial kitchen

    • Cleaning and preparing vegetables for sale and delivery

    • Farm maintenance (including clean-up of everyday farm tools as well as a few big clean-up events each year)

  • Animal Care for Chickens and Goats

  • Participate in small-scale construction projects

  • Participate in farmers’ market


  • Interest in working with adults with intellectual & developmental disabilities

  • Interest in sustainable agriculture

  • Ability to keep a positive attitude & motivate others under difficult conditions

  • Ability to take and follow directions from the Farm Manager

  • Ability to work collaboratively, as part of a larger team

  • Comfortable working with volunteer groups, including youth

  • Able to perform demanding physical labor and work outdoors in varying weather conditions

  • Ability to follow a plan and to be flexible and adapt the plan when needed

  • Ability to balance attention to detail with the understanding that other tasks need to take place simultaneously

Other Duties

This position has no direct reports or supervisor responsibilities. The Crew Member supports the Farm Manager in coordinating the work activities of the Growers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, such as rain and varying temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The Crew Member works with Growers in small groups, performs different tasks each work day, and will work with others who have various disabilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body; be able to reach overhead; be able to work in various positions, including stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling and squatting for extended periods of time; be able to lift, pull and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks; and be able to lift 50 pounds of weight throughout the assigned workday.

Physical stamina to work 2-3 hours with requiring a break.

This is a seasonal hourly position (between April and October). Work hours are negotiable, but would typically take place between Monday and Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Occasional overtime may be required
